Tour Overview

Ramayana trail tour (रामायण यात्रा) is connected with the epic story of Ramayana. It is a religious, cultural and archaeological tour in Sri Lanka where you could experience the places where Ramayana was occurred. According to Ramayana, Ravana, the king of Lanka, abducted Rama's wife Sita. Therefore, Rama and his alliance made rescue campaign that started in India towards Sri Lanka.  Finally, Rama rescued his wife and returned home.


What you could see Ramayana tour in Sri Lanka?

Day 1

Arrival and warmly welcome, and moving to Anuradhapura. En-route visiting, Small Kataragama Temple (Replica of Kataragama temple), Munneshwaram and Manavari Temple. Small Kataragama Temple is dedicated to Murugan, and it is a huge temple. Munneswaram Temple is one of the 5 major Shiva temples of Sri Lanka. According to legend, the temple is situated at a place where King Rama prayed to Shiva after committing a sin, “Brahmahasti” which is killing of a Brahmin/priest, because Ravana who was a Brahmin and had been killed by Rama. He prayed to Shiva and asked for a remedy to ride off the sin. Shiva advised Rama to install four lingams. Manavari Temple is the first place where Rama installed a Lingam as a remedy for Brahmahasti. This lingam is called Ramalingam as it was made by Rama. Overnight stay in Anuradhapura.


Day 2

Visiting some notable Buddhist places in Anuradhapura, and moved to Jaffna. En-route visiting Ketheshwaram Temple in Mannar. Overnight stay in Jaffna. 

Ketheeswaram temple is a Sri Lankan Hindu temple with a two and a half millennia long tradition as a place of Shiva worship. King Ravana's wife Mandodari was from this town, and her father is believed to have built the temple.


Day 3 
Traveling to the Nainative island and Delft island. In Nainative island, visiting Nagapooshanee Amman Temple. In Jaffna, visiting Nallur Kandashamy Temple, Naguleshwaram Temple, Selva Sannidhi Murugan Temple. Overnight stay in Jaffna. 

Nagapushani Amman Temple is located on the island of Nainativu. It is dedicated to Parvati who is locally known as Nagapushani. It is one of 64 Shakti Pithas. Nallur kandashamy Temple is dedicated to Murugan. 

Day 4
Proceed to Trincomalee, en-route visiting Ravana hot water wells and Luxmi Narayana Temple. Overnight stay in Trincomalee. A legend story says that Kanniya was the place where King Ravana carried out the last rites for his mother. When he was unable to find water to duly perform the rites, he in anger pierced his spear into the ground seven times. The very hot water cooled down to the present degree when Ravana's anger calmed down. The temperature of the water is different in all the seven wells.

Day 5
Proceed to Sigiriya. En-route, visiting, Shankari Devi Shakthi Peetam Temple and Tirukoneshwaram Temple, Maha Kali Amman Temple. In the evening, visiting Sigiriya lion rock fortress. Overnight stay in Sigiriya. 

Tirukoneshwaram Temple was built by Rishi Agastya on the instructions of Shiva who was impressed by the devotion of King Ravana. Rama is believed to have offered his prayers here in order to get rid off sin that he killed Ravana who was a Brahmin (Brahmahasthi Dosham). Shankari Devi Shakthi Peetam Temple was built by Ravana, and it was the first in the list of Ashta Dasha Shakti Pitas. Sigiriya is one of the many spots believed to have been a palace of Sita's captivity on Lanka. In the Ramayana Trail legend, even the ancient rock fortress Sigiriya itself is sometimes claimed to have been a palace of Ravana.

Day 6
Proceed to Kandy. En-route visiting Dambulla Golden Temple, and reaching Kandy in evening and visiting the sacred Temple of Tooth Relic. Overnight stay Kandy.

Day 7
Proceed to Nuwara Eliya. En-route, visiting Yehangala (Bed Rock), Seetha Kotuwa (fortress of Sita), Gurulupotha (Ravana’s Aircraft Center). Overnight stay in Nuwara Eliya.

Yahangala: King Ravana's dead body was kept upon this rock for his fellow countrymen to allow them to pay their last respects to their departed highly respected king. Seetha Kotuwa is said to have been the beautiful palace of queen Mandodari. Sitadevi was held captive in this palace until she was moved to Asoka Vatika. Gurulupotha is believed to have served as an aircraft repair center in the capital city of King Ravana.

Day 8

Traveling to Ramboda. En-route visiting Gayathree Amman Temple, Mani Katthuter, Ramboda Hanuman Temple, Ramboda water falls ,Pussellawa mountain range and Sita Pokuna (Sita tear pond ). Overnight stay in Nuwara Eliya. 

Mani Kattuther is believed that Lord Hanuman, after meeting Sitadevi, rested on this hill top on his way back to Rama with the happy news of finding his missed consort. Ramboda Hanuman Temple is the place where Rama gathered forces. Ramboda mean Rama's force. 


Day 9

Proceed to Kataragama. En-route, visiting Sita Amaman Temple, Ashoka Vanam, Sita Devi Agni tested place (Divrompola), Ishtripura caves (Welimada), Ravana waterfalls, Ravana caves and Udaganawa. Overnight stay in Kataragama.

Sita Amman Temple is a beautiful temple. This place is believed as a captive place of Sita. Divurumpola is the place where Sita underwent the fire ordeal (Agni Pariksha) in order to prove her chastity. 

Day 10

Visiting Kataragama Murugan Temple and then proceed to Colombo. En-route visiting Kirinda beach, Ussangoda, Rumassala Sanjeewanee drops and Sinigama God Temple. Overnight stay in Colombo. 

Kataragama is the Sinhalese form of Murugan or Karthikeya. Kataragama is linked to the Ramayana legend. Indra was said to have given him orders to join the battle at the last day of the war to protect Rama from the powerful wrath of Ravana.

Day 11

Visiting Panchamuga Anjaneyer Hanuman Temple, Kalaniya Vibeeshana Temple. Transfer to the Airport.

Panchamuga Anjaneyer Hanuman Temple is the first Anjaneyar temple in Sri Lanka and the only one on the island dedicated to Hanuman in his Panchamuga (meaning five faces)form. It is said to be the only temple in the world to have a chariot for Anjaneyar.  Kelaniya Hindu temple is dedicated to Vibhishana who was the younger brother of Ravana. During the war, he supported Rama, because he disapproved of Ravana's abduction of Sita. After Ravana's death, Rama appointed Vibhishana as the new King of Lanka.
